Tina Ngxokolo… Royal and African

The clothing range of Tina Ngxokolo, sister of the successful Xhosa-knitwear fashion champion Laduma, which captures the vibrancy and earthiness of the Xhosa culture, will be showcased at the year-end Collective Graduate Fashion Show on Friday at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Goldfields Auditorium on North Campus.

Pics and description from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University facebook page.

PS: When Laduma praised his sister’s work as being of the highest calibre, I really thought he was speaking from a sibling’s point-of-view. It is now obvious what Laduma, the designer, saw in Tina’s work. Amazing!

(Hair)ppy Halloween

I have been coming across crazy hairstyles, of late. These hairstyles have inspired today’s post: that’s how scary they are!

I’ll make it a point to not run away next time and actually take pictures of those hideous, sometimes plain hilarious, hairstyles gracing the Jozi streets. For the time being, feast your eyes on these…

Skorzch Collection, SAFW 2012… pic from Zano Sithetho’s facebook

This year, JoziChic’s eye has been on two menswear designers: Laduma Ngxokolo and Zano Sithetho. I had the pleasure of meeting both designers at the recent Mercedes Benz Fashion Show Africa 2012 at Melrose Arch. So if you are unaware of these two talented brothers, it’s about time.

2012 Highlights: “The media coverage has been insane. It’s really rare to get these types of features that even established designers are seeking”
Thoughts on MBFWA: “I’ve been following fashion weeks for years and I have to admit, the game has stepped up. Designers now have signature styles, they don’t just follow trends. Maybe that is because the designers here are from all over Africa, adding to the diversity. As a designer, though, I did not see anything eye-popping”
Keep an eye on: “I have had this collection for the past two years so next year there will be a Menswear Collection coming out, hopefully by March.” There was hinting at MaXhosa coming to Joburg but we’ll just have to wait and see. There is the option to order online if you can’t wait, though.
Dress for Summer: “This summer I will be wearing loafers, white tailored linen shorts, a simple t-shirt and a straw hat.”
Summer Tip for Men: “Dress up uniquely; you don’t always have to wear the latest trends”

Take a Walk in my Shoes: Foot Talk

pic from herdaily.com

Feet, like hands, tell us a lot about the person. Some feet are neglected, spotting claw-like nails that rip apart a sock as tries to warm up the poor foot. Some feet are so gorgeous and clean a dude with a foot fetish would get an instant hard-on. Clean feet with trimmed toe-nails and no funky smell and nasty corns usually belong to people who take care of themselves: people who know that appearance may not be everything but it sure does matter a lot. So if you have feet issues or queries: be it those irritating callouses, not finding the right shoes for your foot, funky smells, toe nail polish colour dilemma, whatever voet nonsense, this is the place.

JoziChic Foot Care Tip #1

Wear shoes that are comfortable. Ladies, we know you look gorgeous in those killer heels but when you walk like you are having spasms… You’re killing us. And remember, uncomfortable shoes cause corns. The same applies for you too, men! So take care and invest in good, quality shoes. Your feet will love you for it.

JoziChic Shoe of the Moment: Nine West (ladies)

This shoe is great for work. The short heel makes it comfortable and the patent leather and design make this shoe classy and stylish. It’s just the type of shoe that will take you from dawn ‘til dusk.

JoziChic Shoe of the Moment: Adidas (gents)

These adidas Originals Gazelle OG shoes ooze street-style appeal and comfort is on par with its great looks. The Gazelle has a super-soft smooth leather upper with spilt-suede detail, synthetic lining for inner support and blown rubber outsole. These are classic sneaks that will never go out of fashion.

Until next time, show those feet some love!

Scary Beautiful Shoes

pic from ufunk.net

pic from bellenews.com

These outrageous yet beautiful (you have to admit) shoes are the product of South African student artist, Leanie van der Vyver. Leanie is studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and these pair of Gaga-reminiscent heels, designed by Dutch shoemaker Rene van der Berg, scored our Leanie the nomination for a “prestigious Gerrit Rietveld design prize”. Her shoes have caused quite a stir in the world of fashion and art and as expected, the ripples have reached home.

Of the creation, which forms part of her thesis, Leanie had this to say:
“This design might seem quirky and fun, but it is firstly a critique on how the fashion and beauty industry disregards the human body in its constant reinvention of the new extreme.” (The Star, Thursday 11 October 2012).

To find out more, just google (lol).
