It was curiosity that led Isaac Newton to discover gravity and Neil Armstrong to walk on the Moon. And it was curiosity that led our founder, Henry David Lee to create our iconic jeans. Passionate about seeking a purposeful design for every moment of everyday, he established the Lee brand in 1889 and started a story that even now is continuing to liberate the way we live and dress.
Today we are still creating jeans to fit the evolving metropolitan living. And no win 2014, we celebrate this unceasing passion in our 125th anniversary.

So in the spirit of that abiding curiosity that defines us, we invite you to join us in our anniversary celebrations as we continue to write more chapters in our legendary denim story. Let’s Celebrate!

Gavin Rajah for Legit COMING SOON

Internationally acclaimed fashion designer Gavin Rajah is known for his ultra-glamorous couture collections that have inspired a loyal following of fashion doyennes both on South African shores and in fashion conscious cities around the world. The designer regularly showcases his creations at Fashion Weeks in both New York and Paris.

Now, for the first time, Gavin’s signature look will be available in a ready-to-wear collection for the mainstream market. The designer has partnered with LEGiT to design a summer collection, which is due to hit stores on 25 November 2013.

All the garments in the range were personally designed by Gavin, who sketched each piece and created custom prints exclusively for LEGiT. The silhouettes and detailing are inspired from couture trends for summer 2013/14. These trends were translated into a ready-to-wear collection inspired by youth culture and digital trends embodying the strong, energetic and sexy LEGiT woman.

Gavin says: “Working on this collaboration has been inspiring as it allows me to delight a new audience. The collection will be quintessentially Gavin Rajah, perfect for the glamour of the festive season.”

The Gavin Rajah for LEGiT collection includes dresses, leggings, tops, skirts as well as shoes and accessories, allowing shoppers to own the complete Gavin Rajah look, or mix and match with their own pieces. Gavin’s personal favourites are the cocktail dresses, which are party-ready for every occasion on the fashionistas social calendar,

The collection uses luxe fabrics such as jacquard, brocade, and sequins as well as athletic/tech fabrics such as neoprene, lycra and mesh in bold summer colours and geometric detailing.

Accessories such as a sophisticated metallic gold woven clutch, shoes in bright summer colours adorned in gold links, and thick woven gold necklaces embellished with gemstones and spikes complete the Gavin Rajah for LEGiT look.

The collection differs from the designer’s couture in its appeal to a younger market and its accessibility – opening up a new generation of Gavin devotees.

LEGiT strives to bring limited edition ranges to their customers, making high-end fashion accessible to their fashion-forward shoppers. The youth brand started its collaboration ranges last year and these partnerships have strengthened the brand’s market presence.

“This collaboration is a once in a lifetime partnership – we are excited about being able to bring Gavin’s high-fashion glamour to our fashion-forward customers,” says Hazel Pillay, Divisional Buyer for LEGiT.

The collection will be available in 190 LEGiT stores across South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland from 25 November 2013 at a price bracket in keeping with LEGiT’s current ranges.

Founder and entrepreneur, Steven Manzini, established Soweto Fashion Week to grow the local industry on a global scale. Educating people about the art is a mission in SA but encouraging independence is vitally important too.
A season of colour, fun flair, glamour and all things that you call FASHION. With trends like Monochrome, black and white has gone crazy! “Wear it and go glam, all types of ways to be the center of all things fashion” says Stephen.

Soweto Fashion Week is a podium that inspires and supports to build consciousness of upcoming and established designers in South Africa – particularly those based in Soweto. The Fashion Week attempts to widen its perspective by encompassing two seasons and introducing a change to the face of modeling.

Since the launch of Soweto Fashion Week in 2011, the event runs for three days as opposed to a full week. However Manzini is confident that in the coming summer collection this event will grow to a full week. In fact, it has already harvested international courtesy and this year’s event features not only local talent but also designers that have a full vision on SA fashion.

The red carpet invites all fashionistas to this extravagant fashion detonation. Doors open at 18:30 from the 21st to 23rd November at the Soweto Hotel.

The Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival – the best way to celebrate our Heritage

Soweto, get ready for the celebration of the year! Assupol in association with Hilltop Live presents the Hugh Masekela Heritage festival on Saturday 28 September. The Soweto Cricket Oval (Elkah Stadium) will play host to a line-up never seen before including Bra Hugh, Khaya Mahlangu, Phuzekhemisi, Mi Casa, Pu2ma, Jeremy Loops, Desmond & The Tutus and Thandiswa Mazwai.

The Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival is a family festival celebrating togetherness in our beautiful country. A childrens area will be available throughout the day with jumping castles, face painters and more. There will also be a variety of food stalls and a bar available at the show, if you prefer not to bring a picnic basket with.

Not often does a jazz festival boast such a diverse line-up of artists. When putting the line-up together, Bra Hugh wanted to ensure that all communities are able to celebrate our differences together.

Mi Casa has become a house-hold name and is a regular on television and radio alike with their latest single “Jika”. Mo-T, one of the members of Mi Casa, father, Kgasoane Banza, played trumpet for Mango Groove. For Mi Casa, heritage is an important aspect of a child’s upbringing – “it is necessary to know where you come from, where you are and where you are going to” according to Jay, another member of the band.

In a recent interview regarding the festival, one of the countries up and coming artists, Pu2ma, promised a performance filled with fire and will sing some of her own songs as well as songs from great jazz artists like the late Miriam Makeba that inspired her.

Thandiswa Mazwai had a very interesting start in the late 1990s as lead singer of the very popular kwaito band, Bongo Maffin. Thandiswa’s music includes traditional Xhosa rhythms, Mbaqanga, reggae, kwaito, funk and jazz sounds. Thandiswa is a Soweto native, and the Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival, is back on home her turf. She is a world traveller and have performed across the world, from Cannes to New York and in London.

The Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival is presented by Assupol, Hilltop Live, Soweto TV and Jozi FM.

Described as a band with unique individuals who bring their explosive talent together to create a unique and original sound, Mi Casa has redefined the South African music industry landscape with their creative beats and catchy tunes. This phenomenal band will showcase their incredible artistic wizadry at the picturesque Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens on Sunday, 28 July.
